Charles Van Doren, writer, editor, and academic, sweeps us into his richly imagined evocation of life in thirteenth-century Tuscany. As events unfold with ease and authenticity, it is intriguing to watch the bold and interesting characters develop, intermingle, and reckon with the consequences of their actions. Cortona, a small city in Tuscany, is surrounded by high stone walls and retains to this day its medieval spirit. Van Doren, made it his second home for more than twenty-five years. As a man with a passionate need to “know,” he studied everything he could find about the history of Cortona. History is so much a part of The Lion of Cortona, you almost don’t notice how much you are learning. Santa Margherita, who lived and cared for the people of Cortona in the thirteenth century, appears in the story as she actually was, at least from all available accounts. The same can be said of the Casali family; the Palazzo Casali still stands in one of the two main piazzas of the city. Thomas Aquinas, the philosopher, also has a role in the story, as does the great and powerful Visconti family. Nino, one of the imaginary heroes, meets Aquinas in France. Benno, the main hero, joins the army of the archbishop of Milan, Ottone Visconti. Nina, Nino’s sister, loves Benno. But because of his humble origins, Benno must prove himself before he can claim her. Many events in the novel actually happened. The first is the betrayal and invasion of Cortona by the bishop of Arezzo. A traitor opened the gate at the bottom of the city for his army and the chaos that ensued. Nino, Nina, and Benno were hardly more than children when that happened. Another true event is the Battle of Pizzighettoni, at which Benno distinguished himself as a leader and hero. Surrounding these two events, much of the story is entirely the creation of a man’s imagination, inspired by the city he loved.

The Lion of Cortona Exiles Volume I eBook Charles Van Doren Reviews

I have just completed all three volumes of Van Doren's Lion of Cortona and i loved it!! what a great historical depiction of Cortona and the Tuscan valley during the 13th century and a captivating set of characters and events. The constant warring between towns and families, church and state--Italy in its fractured past is well documented. However some of the best writing is the dialogue between characters who wrestle with philosophic questions that still plague us today--Thomas Aquinas and Nino's work together is quite "enlightening."
If you order Vol. I, you'd better get Vols II and III as well, as you whisk through this quickly and want to know what happens next.
This gripping series deals with the fortunes of Torreoni family, highly regarded in 13th Century Cortona, yet driven out in the wars between the rivaling factions to seek their own fortunes elsewhere. Nina and Nino, sympathetically drawn children of Gian Torreoni travel different painful roads in this first book. Nina's love for Benno, the son of Giovanni the swineherd, appears doomed as does Nino's for Angelica Bordoni, the daughter of a rival to Gian. The opening sections draw a brilliant picture of the horrors of war in that period as one of Gian's children disappears as they flee the city. We also learn that Benno is of higher rank than we were told initially.
Wonderful book....all 3 volumes!
From the exciting opening, I found myself wanting to know what would happen to members of the Torreone household. I was swept up in the action, as one of the reviewers claimed. I'm looking forward to reading The Wide World.
Had to stop reading it because of confusing story.
