The Radical Leap A Personal Lesson in Extreme Leadership Steve Farber 9780793185689 Books

This book is a business parable - through the story of the main character Steve, a leadership consultant, in which he uncovers the principles of Extreme Leadership - the Radical LEAP:

"Love generates Energy, inspires Audacity, and require Proof. LEAP, you see, is simply the Extreme Leader's active, dynamic expression of love."

A quick entertaining, and educative read. What I particularly liked about this book is the handbook at the end that summarizes the key concepts and how to apply them on a regular basis.

Below are excerpts that I found particularly insightful:

1- "Leadership is the art of mobilizing others to want to struggle for shared aspirations."

2- "And we follow human beings; we don't follow idealized icones of unattainable perfection."

3- "If I love who we are, and if I love what we can be, then I'll love the process of how we get there. And in order to make it all happen, I will act boldly and courageously and I will, at time, fail magnificently. But my love demands that I try. Demands it."

4- "Relationships in the world of business are won in analogous ways...by paying nearly obsessive attention to the needs, desires, hopes, and aspirations of everyone who touches your business. By knowing not only when to stand firm on principle - there is such a thing as tough love - but also when to sacrifice some of your own short-term needs in order for us all to be successful in the long run. And by proving through your own actions that you really love your business, your customers, your colleagues, and your employees."

5- "Do what you love in the service of people who love what you do."

6- "...management has to stop pretending to be the Great Protector, but the rest of us have to stop askin' and expectin' them to be. We gotta get over the whole idea of 'them,' as a matter of fact. We need to hold ourselves accountable and stop looking to blame 'them' when things go wrong."

7- "You may not think that you can change the Whole World that we live in (and you may be wrong) but you can certainly change the world - small w - that you and yours live in: the world of your company, the world of your employees, the world of your industry, or the world of your family. To deny that is to deny your capability as a human being."

8- "Cultivate Love...Generate Energy...Inspire Audacity...Provide Proof"

The Radical Leap A Personal Lesson in Extreme Leadership Steve Farber 9780793185689 Books Reviews

For anyone looking at leadership, this is a great read. It is a relatively short book written in a story fashion but does a great job of delivering several key leadership principles.
I love this book for many reasons. Close to the top is that it reminds us that LOVE does belong in the workplace. Steve Farber encourages us to remember why we took that job, started that business, or simply trek in to the office each day. He encourages us to reconnect, to be real, and to live publicly on the 'skinny branches' of life and work. I give this book to every single new hire that starts at our company. Because it is a fun read, it gives them additional information about our culture - something other than typical company literature. These are golden business principles, creatively told and beautifully framed by Steve.
This is a very thought provoking book. I am anxious to continue my leadership journey by incorporating LEAP in my daily life. Stay Tune....
If you're looking to recharge your corporate batteries--or trying to acquire your first set--this book is for you. Farber tells the story, his story perhaps, of a management consultant who has lost his passion for the work. He's going through the motions until he encounters a series of oddball business visionaries who utterly transform his spirit. What makes these visionaries so odd is their fundamental approach to work they infuse it with love. The LEAP in The Radical Leap stands for ...

cultivate Love
generate Energy
inspire Audacity
provide Proof

That's an approach to leadership that's as inspiring as it is daring. I wonder how many of us have the courage to follow Farber's way? The Radical Leap requires leaders to have a vision, bare their souls, relish their mistakes, invite risk, challenge conventional wisdom and express love always. Wow.

Farber was smart to write this as a novelette. If he had laid out his ideas in a typical self-help book, they would have sounded pie-in-the-sky. But as Farber relates his own transformation in narrative form, encountering a variety of hiccups along the way, his gives his ideas a concreteness that makes them seem not only realistic, but implementable.
I believe that putting "The Radical Leap" into my hands at this particular time in my life was Devine Intervention for when the Student is ready, the Teacher will appear. The teacher in this case is Steve Farber and "The Radical Leap". Not only did I like the relaxed way the book was written, the messages were easily gleaned from the text while it kept me reading on, in just two sittings I might add. There were so many great quotes in the book that I have already used in my business but a couple were, "Do what you love in the service of people who live what you do!" Another is, "Life is too short, don't live it without your heart!" At the end of the book there are a series of questions you ask yourself that can't help but cause you to think about the direction your life is taking. In my case it has caused me to change directions! I highly recommend this book unless of course you are absolutely satisfied with your life and your life's direction.
As a business owner, public speaker and marketing blogger -- I read a lot of business books. Don't let the size and parable-style of this book fool you. It is the most inspiring, brilliant business book I have ever read.

Many business books get you to think. This book gets you to think, feel and take action. I can't imagine someone reading this book and not being a better leader for it.

Farber's characters remind us of the kind of leader we aspired to be when we first got into business. It teaches us what we need to do to find that passion and drive again and finally, it pushes us to not just read it...but to do it.

It's a book about leadership, success, and ultimately, it is a book about love.

Not only will you love it...you'll find yourself giving it as a gift to every business person you know. It's that good.
